A potentially hazardous asteroid spanning the length of the Washington Monument will make a safe, close approach to Earth on Sept. 18 and you can watch the flyby live online courtesy of the Virtual Telescope Project. 2025 FA22's next flyby of Earth will occur at 3:42 a.m. EDT (0742 GMT) on Sept. 18, when the asteroid will pass 523,206 miles (842018 kilometers) from our planet — the equivalent to around 2.2 lunar distances — posing zero risk to us, or the moon. Stargazers can tune in to the Virtual Telescope Project's YouTube stream beginning at 11 p.m. EDT on Sept. 17 (3:00 GMT Sept. 18) to see live views from the organization's robotic telescopes located in Italy as the asteroid approaches its minimum distance to Earth. The 427-951-foot-wide (130-290 meters-meter-wide (427-951 ft) asteroid 2025 FA22 was discovered in March earlier this year by the Pan-STARRS wide-field imaging facility. The wandering solar system body was later classified as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) owing to its size/brightness and orbit, which give it the potential to one day make a threateningly close approach to Earth. "While, we repeat, this is a safe approach, it is still remarkable: a similar close encounter, involving an object of that size coming that close, happens one time every ten years on average, accordingly to JPL Center for NEO Studies," wrote Virtual Telescope Institute founder Gianluca Masi in a blog post announcing the livestream. Following the close pass, 2025 FA22 will continue its 668-day looping path through the inner solar system that takes it well beyond the orbit of Mars. NASA estimates that an asteroid the size of 2025 FA22 strikes our planet just once every 20,000 years and creates an impact crater measuring up to 1.3 miles (2.1 km) in diameter.
This summer, sea buckthorn puree from Huachi county, Qingyang city, in northwest China's Gansu Province was transported thousands of kilometers to Tianjin Port for export. The shipment marked the first time Gansu Province has exported sea buckthorn products internationally. On the hillside of Chengguan village in Rouyuan town, Huachi county, Zhang Pengfei skillfully trims waist-high sea buckthorn trees. As head of a seedling farmers' cooperative, he has worked with sea buckthorn there for 16 years. Photo shows sea buckthorn fruits produced in Huachi county, Qingyang city, northwest China's Gansu Province. (Photo/Huang Xiao) Huachi county, located on the edge of the Ziwuling forest area, has cultivated sea buckthorn cultivation. Over nearly two decades, the local government has promoted the industry in line with local conditions. The county's sea buckthorn forests now cover more than 470,000 mu (about 31,333 hectares). "Sea buckthorn trees aren't picky about soil or climate, but the challenge is removing the husk without damaging the seed inside. It took us a long time to figure out," Zhang said. Each spring, Zhang soaks the seeds in water at 60 degrees Celsius for 24 hours, dries them, and gently rubs off the husk by hand. The cooperative now produces 5 million seedlings a year using this method. Huachi county produces more than 15 million sea buckthorn seedlings annually from over 150 mu of nurseries, supplying multiple provinces across China. (Photo/Huang Xiao) Senior engineer Liang Fan from Huachi county's bureau of natural resources leads a team in a valley in Rouyuan town, explaining how sea buckthorn grows in tea plantations. "In tea plantations, sea buckthorn trees are planted more densely, grow shorter, and have a different male-to-female balance than in orchards," Liang noted. The valley contains 500 mu of sea buckthorn tea plantations, with nearby hillsides hosting another 500 mu of orchards. An additional 9,000 mu of sea buckthorn forest extends across the surrounding area. Huachi county sits at the northern edge of Qingyang, where the Loess Plateau meets the Mu Us Desert, forming a front line against northern sandstorms. (Photo/Lei Caili) Sea buckthorn thrives in Huachi's harsh environment, withstanding cold, drought and sand. The hardy plant grows on mountain slopes, sandy soils and soft sandstone, even with limited rainfall. Farmers cultivate sea buckthorn for tea on sheltered, sun-facing terraces for easier cultivation and harvesting. Growers choose large-fruited varieties with nutrient-rich, deep-green leaves that villagers harvest from spring through autumn for tea production. Flat areas with deeper soil and irrigation support are used for orchard cultivation instead. Huachi county balances environmental protection with commercial cultivation as sea buckthorn orchards and tea plantations expand alongside ecological plantings. Every September and October, Xian Cuili and her fellow villagers in Chengguan village enter their busiest season as sea buckthorn berries ripen for harvest. A villager holds a basket of freshly picked sea buckthorn fruits in Huachi county, Qingyang city, northwest China's Gansu Province. (Photo/Tian Wei) Xian works with sea buckthorn throughout the year under a government-supported program where local forestry departments and enterprises manage cultivation. Villagers harvest berries during peak season, collect leaves for tea in three seasons, and plant new forests in spring and autumn. These activities generate average annual incomes exceeding 9,000 yuan (about $1,260) per villager. On the production line of a biotechnology company, the fragrance of sea buckthorn tea fills the air as workers wash and dry freshly picked leaves before withering, rolling, roasting and scenting them. The company, among Huachi county's first sea buckthorn processors, sources branches from local and regional farms. Over more than a decade, it developed products ranging from raw materials to puree and beverages for nationwide distribution, creating a crucial income source for local farmers. Liang Fan (left) shows a villager how to pick sea buckthorn leaves in Huachi county, Qingyang city, northwest China's Gansu Province. (People's Daily Overseas Edition/Song Chaojun) Today, the company runs nine production lines for processing fruit, tea, puree and seed oil. In 2024, it purchased about 5,000 tonnes of sea buckthorn, launched more than 20 products and achieved a total output value of over 40 million yuan. Local villagers benefit directly from the company's expansion through supply contracts and employment. The nine production lines source all fruit and leaves from local farmers, while over 100 villagers work at the factory.

CHENGDU, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's largest shale gas production base in the southern Sichuan Basin, southwest China's Sichuan Province, has achieved a cumulative output exceeding 100 billion cubic meters, making it the country's first shale gas field to reach this milestone. Despite complex geological conditions, including deep burial and thin layers, PetroChina Southwest Oil and Gasfield Company and its partners developed key technologies such as 3D geological modeling, optimized drilling, and precision fracturing, enabling efficient extraction from challenging reserves. From January to August, the field added 237 new wells and 4.5 billion cubic meters of capacity. Daily output surpassed 48 million cubic meters, a historic high. Annual production is expected to exceed 16 billion cubic meters by year-end, accounting for 60 percent of China's shale gas output and 7 percent of total natural gas production, the company said. Since the first shale gas well began production, the base has contributed over 1.5 trillion cubic meters of proven reserves and more than 2,300 operational wells, solidifying its role as a pillar of China's energy security and a major driver of future gas supply growth. Shale gas is mainly methane. It is considered a clean, new energy resource.
Artemis 2 astronauts will be studied for how sleep, stress and radiation shape human health in deep space during their moon mission next year. The second installment of NASA's Artemis program to return to the moon and establish a sustained human presence in deep space is set to be the first crewed flight test of its Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The four-person crew is tasked with putting the vessel through its paces in the cislunar environment, and performing several science experiments during their mission. Some of that research involves the astronauts themselves, who will turn into a quartet of biomedical subjects to help NASA gather in-flight data on the human body beyond low Earth orbit for the first time in more than 50 years. As they have with hundreds of physiological tests conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), NASA will add the research to its growing understanding of the biological repercussions of life in microgravity, according to a recent release. One of the experiments the Artemis 2 astronauts will undertake will see them join a long-running NASA effort to build a comprehensive understanding of how spaceflight affects human health. Samples of blood, urine and saliva are being collected in the months before launch, and the astronauts will undergo regular checks during their 10-day mission and follow-ups after their return. NASA hopes to use the samples to track changes in cardiovascular health, nutrition, immunity and stress across multiple stages of training, flight and recovery. The Artemis Research for Crew Health and Readiness (ARCHeR) project will investigate how crew performance might be affected by time spent as such a far distance from Earth while inside Orion's confined space, combined with the astronauts' demanding schedule. Each Artemis 2 astronaut will wear wrist sensors to log movement and sleep throughout the mission. Pre- and post-mission evaluations will be compared to in-flight data to better understand how the deep space mission influences the crew's alertness, stress and ability to work together cohesively. Samples provided by the crew before, during and after their mission will also be used to study their immune systems. In this case, immune system markers in their saliva samples will help researchers evaluate how the body reacts to space radiation. To save space and power aboard Orion during their mission, the crew is foregoing refrigeration of their in-flight saliva samples, and will instead make their deposits on specially designed dab papers, which will absorb the samples for simpler storage. Once they return, scientists will test the papers for dormant viruses triggered by the microgravity environment — a phenomenon seen aboard the ISS, where stress has been documented as a trigger to reactivate illnesses like chickenpox and shingles. Artemis 2 astronauts will also be accompanied by thumb-sized "avatars" of themselves, in the form of blood samples grown to simulate bone marrow on organ-on-a-chip devices. These chips will ride inside Orion as it passes through the Van Allen belts — zones of charged particles between the Earth and moon — testing how marrow responds to deep space radiation and microgravity. Results will be compared to ISS experiments to see if the chip technology can accurately predict how tissues react outside Earth's radiation-hardened magnetosphere. During Artemis 1, Orion carried 5,600 passive and 34 active radiation sensors. For Artemis 2, the spacecraft has been reduced to a modest six active sensors inside the cabin. Additionally, astronauts will wear personal dosimeters. The devices will measure the consistent radiation exposure experienced throughout the mission, and detect sudden spikes from things like solar storms. If readings reach dangerous levels, astronauts can construct a makeshift radiation shield inside Orion, fortifying themselves between the spacecraft's heatshield and water storage canisters, both of which are better at absorbing penetrating radiation than other onboard materials. NASA has selected Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen as the crew for the Artemis 2 mission. They are scheduled to launch no earlier than Feb. 2026, with a launch window that extends through April.

Blue Origin launched its 35th New Shepard suborbital mission this morning (Sept. 18) after a nearly four-week delay. The uncrewed flight, known as NS-35, lifted off today from Blue Origin's West Texas site at 9:01 a.m. EDT (1301 GMT; 8:01 a.m. local Texas time). Instead of a crew, the Blue Origin capsule carried more than 40 scientific payloads on its suborbital flight, including 24 payloads from the NASA TechRise Student Challenge, which empowers teams of 6th-12th graders to design, build and launch experiments on NASA supported test flights. New Shepard consists of a first-stage rocket and a capsule, both of which are reusable. Flights of the vehicle get above the Kármán Line — the widely recognized boundary where space begins, at 62 miles up (100 kilometers) — and last 10 to 12 minutes from liftoff to capsule touchdown. After a successful launch, the New Shepard booster descended for a safe landing 2 miles downrange of the launch pad about 7.5 minutes after liftoff. The capsule descended under parachutes for a touchdown at T+10:15. NS-35 was originally supposed to fly on Aug. 23, but Blue Origin stood down from that attempt to work an issue with the booster's avionics. The company tried again on Aug. 26 but scrubbed for the same reason. Today's attempt will be the first since then. More than 40 scientific payloads will take flight on NS-35, bringing the total number of payloads lofted by New Shepard to date over 200, according to the company. "The payload manifest includes 24 experiments from NASA's TechRise Student Challenge, along with thousands of postcards on behalf of Club for the Future, Blue Origin's STEAM-focused nonprofit," Blue Origin wrote in an NS-35 mission description. (STEAM stands for "science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.") New Shepard also conducts crewed flights; indeed, 14 of its 34 missions to date have carried people to the final frontier. The most recent such jaunt, NS-34, launched crypto billionaire Justin Sun and five other people from West Texas on Aug. 3. Blue Origin has also flown a number of celebrities, including singer Katy Perry and "Star Trek" actor William Shatner.
Picture of the new evidence revealed by Heilongjiang Provincial Archives Photo: China Central TelevisionHeilongjiang Provincial Archives on Thursday released to the public for the first time a special collection of 62 archival documents on the "forced recruitment and enslavement of Chinese laborers by the Japanese army of aggression," China Central Television (CCTV) reported. These valuable records reveal in depth the "labor control" policies implemented by Japanese imperialism during its invasion of China, exposing the planned and organized plunder and enslavement of Chinese laborers. The original documents provide irrefutable evidence of the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Japanese militarism, according to CCTV. The archives released this time were formed during the period of Japanese occupation. They cover a wide range of topics, including labor utilization and control policies, the planning and implementation of labor conscription, as well as the inhumane treatment of laborers and their resistance. The documents shed light on the historical fact of forced labor conscription carried out by Japanese imperialism during its 14-year colonial rule in Northeast China following the September 18 Incident. To sustain its war machine and plunder resources, the Japanese army, under the pretext of "labor supply," resorted to administrative coercion and violent means to conscript large numbers of Chinese laborers, who were forced into grueling work such as building roads, mining, and constructing military facilities, suffering systematic and institutionalized exploitation and oppression. Of particular note are the original files on the "supply" of laborers by the Japanese Army's Unit 731 in Northeast China and the forced conscription of prisoners of war for the construction of military fortifications. These first-hand records provide concrete evidence of the Japanese invaders' colonial rule, military expansion and economic plunder in Northeast China. The archives show that Japan sought to "legitimize" forced labor by promulgating the so-called Ordinance on the Requisition of Military Supplies through the puppet state of "Manchukuo." The ordinance explicitly stipulated that the Japanese army held the supreme power of requisition and authorized suppression against those who resisted. The conscripted laborers were subjected to inhumane treatment and extremely harsh living conditions. Archival records show that they suffered from acute food shortages, lacked basic clothing to keep out the cold, and were forced to engage in intensive labor. Many laborers attempted to escape, but the Japanese army and the puppet regime carried out crackdowns through arrests, collective punishment and even brutal killings, completely stripping them of personal freedom and basic dignity, according to CCTV. Nie Boxin, head of the archival compilation department of the Heilongjiang Provincial Archives, said the newly released documents are not only important materials for historical research, but also serve as a strong rebuttal to Japanese right-wing forces who deny aggression and whitewash crimes. The release aims to keep alive the memory of suffering, uphold human justice, and remind the world to cherish peace and oppose war. These archives stand as historical evidence of the crimes committed by Japanese militarism and provide a lasting warning for humanity's pursuit of peace and development, said Nie. Global Times

Dive Brief: Florida’s Orange County Public Schools will reassign 116 teachers to new positions this year as a result of declining student enrollment, Superintendent Maria Vazquez told attendees during a Sept. 9 school board meeting. The nation’s eighth-largest district saw its enrollment decline more sharply than initially projected, Vazquez said. The district expected to see about 3,000 fewer students enroll this school year, but as of the 10th day of the 2025-26 school year, that number expanded to 6,600 — 2,500 of whom are immigrant students who previously attended school in the district, she said. Because of a hiring freeze, Orange County Public Schools has 157 vacancies that officials hope will allow the district to retain most of its instructional staff, Vazquez said. “While we hope that it’s a 1-to-1 match, it will depend on the certifications teachers have,” she said. Dive Insight: The unexpected shift in student enrollment “has a direct impact on our school resources,” Vazquez said, adding that school budgets have to be recalculated and readjusted from previous enrollment-based projections. That means schools that started the school year with lower enrollment than expected will lose funding, she said. The district’s mass teacher reassignments come at a time when declining student enrollment is taking a serious toll on school budgets in districts nationwide — driving K-12 leaders to start planning for potential closures, consolidations and layoffs. As seen in Orange County Public Schools, enrollment dips are also beginning to strain staffing capacities. Declining enrollment may begin to play a bigger role in district staffing strategies, especially in places where more teachers were hired during COVID-19, when schools received a historic, one-time influx of emergency federal funding. With that money gone, some districts have turned to hiring freezes or even layoffs as enrollment continues to plummet, according to education finance experts. But Orange County Public Schools is not the lone district in Florida dealing with this challenge. In late August, Broward County Public Schools announced plans to “address” 34 of its 239 schools for possible closures or consolidations, as it tallied an enrollment decline of 10,360 students on the 10th day of the 2025-26 school year. May survey data revealed that half of former BCPS parents put their children in nontraditional schooling options because they wanted higher-quality instruction. The district’s finding comes as state school choice options are increasingly available for parents, with participation in private school choice programs nationally jumping 25% between 2024 to 2025, according to a recent analysis by EdChoice, a pro-school choice advocacy group. On top of that, declining birthrates are further compounding public school enrollment concerns. With the Trump administration’s efforts to amp up immigration enforcement — sometimes even reportedly near school grounds — K-12 leaders and various lawsuits have also documented a drop in student attendance due to fears of deportation. In the case of Orange County Public Schools, the sudden drop in reported immigrant student attendance and enrollment in the new school year could be a sign that this fear is translating into a deeper trend moving forward. A school board member in Florida’s Palm Beach County School District recently made such a connection, telling local news station WPTV that the immigration enforcement climate is a big reason for why his district’s enrollment declined by over 6,000 students this year.
