A new survey shows households with children under age 18 are experiencing economic strain, with parents suffering from depression, burnout and hopelessness. Capita launched the new national survey, Quarterly Insights from American Families, in partnership with YouGov. The survey will be conducted quarterly. “This is the baseline,” said Elliot Haspel, a senior fellow with Capita. “We really want to be able to ask questions that serve as an early warning system for family well-being.” Haspel said what stood out to him from the survey is “how much parents are facing precarity right now… I think that it tells us that families are really struggling and they really need support.” The questions YouGov, on behalf of Capita, surveyed 1,000 parents with children under age 18 between Feb. 2 and Feb. 16, 2026. North Carolina is one of four states that were oversampled in the survey, meaning the results are especially representative of those facing parents in those states. (The others are Colorado, Michigan and New Jersey.) The survey consists of 69 questions (available here) designed to track families across three dimensions: stability, predictability, and quality of life. Capita defines the question underlying each dimension: Stability: Can families meet basic needs without falling into crisis? Predictability: Can they plan their lives without constant disruption? Quality of life: Do they have the time, health, and connection to flourish, not just survive? Haspel explained that this survey is meant to fill the gap between surveys such as RAPID, which focuses on parents and caregivers of young children, and surveys of all Americans more broadly. He said two-thirds of the survey questions will remain the same each time, and another third will shift based on Capita’s specific areas of interest at a given moment. Haspel pointed out that for all Americans, life can be stressful, and parenting in particular will always come with its own stressors. “The issue is, what are the artificial, unnecessary stressors that we put on families as a result of policy choices?” Haspel said. The answers One of the main findings from the survey revolves around the economic pressure that families are facing. As the Capita report puts it: “Multiple indicators point to significant and widespread financial stress.” Here are some of those indicators: More than a third were worried at some point in the last year that food would run out before they had money to buy more — and almost as many actually had that happen. One in 5 reported skipping out on needed medical care due to costs in the last year, and 15 percent skipped filling a prescription for the same reason. In the last three months, 20 percent of households reported a member losing a job or having their hours cut. In the last month, 25 percent of respondents said they had a shift canceled, shortened, or extended with less than 24 hours’ notice. The same percentage were required to be “on call” — available without guaranteed hours — during that period. Financial stress can be a leading driver of “toxic stress.” This compounding, long-term stress can do permanent damage to the health of parents and the development of children — and can sometimes lead to adverse childhood experiences. Evidence shows that safe, stable and nurturing relationships with adults can protect children from the negative outcomes of adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress. But the survey suggests most parents are struggling to maintain that kind of relationship with their children. Two-thirds of respondents said that in the last month, stress made it hard to be as patient with their children as they wanted to be. And half of parents reported feeling down, depressed or hopeless in the last two weeks. There are several questions in the survey that pertain specifically to work and child care. Here are some related findings: More than 70 percent of respondents describe their job as family friendly. Almost two-thirds said family life is a top priority, and they want their job to fit around it. In the last year, 27 percent of respondents missed work or lost pay because of child care problems. One in 5 parents regularly supervise their children while working. Despite the challenges presented by scheduling, about 70 percent of parents report being satisfied with their existing child care situation, whether they have children who are school age or below. And 81 percent said their communities are welcoming to families with minor children. But 43 percent said their work schedules made it hard to keep consistent routines for their children, and that matters. “That lack of control over one’s schedule contributes to lack of control over one’s life more broadly, and it can affect parenting relationships,” Haspel said. As the Capita report explains: “Job quality or schedule quality is often thought of as labor policy, it’s not thought of as a family policy,” Haspel said. “If you care about having strong, healthy families, this is a contributing factor.” The meaning While this first set of survey results represents the baseline of what Capita plans to measure over time, there are still significant takeaways from this early warning system. “A lot of what we’ve been hearing around the issues with affordability, the issues with being able to navigate all the extra challenges of parenting in 2020s America is showing up in family well-being,” Haspel said. Here’s what Capita has to say about the initial survey results: The report goes on to point out that policies supporting the well-being of children and families are most likely to succeed if they address multiple aspects of family hardship and reach all families who are affected.

latest news The Global Times learned on Wednesday from sources that several Philippine aircraft recently illegally intruded into China's territorial airspace over Huangyan Dao without Chinese government permission. In response, the PLA deployed naval and air forces to track, monitor, warn and expel them in accordance with the law and regulations. Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command said on Wednesday that two Philippine C-208 aircraft on Wednesday illegally intruded into the territorial airspace over China's Huangyan Dao without the approval of the Chinese government. The naval and air forces dispatched by the PLA Southern Theater Command warned, and expelled the Philippine aircraft in accordance with the law and regulations, according to a statement the PLA Southern Theater Command published on its official WeChat account. "The actions of the Philippine side, seriously infringing upon China's sovereignty, are highly likely to lead to misunderstandings and misjudgments. We sternly urge the Philippine side to immediately stop infringement and provocations. The theater command forces remain on high alert at all times, to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and security, and regional peace and stability," Senior Captain Zhai Shichen, spokesperson for the PLA Southern Theater Command said. Also on Wednesday, China's Ministry of National Defense slammed Manila's recent illegal provocative actions. When asked to comment on reports that a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reconnaissance aircraft carrying journalists was warned off by PLA Navy ships via radio communications during its patrol near Huangyan Dao on March 7, and that the PCG said it would enhance public communications to increase transparency and counter what it describes as China's bullying, Senior Colonel Jiang Bin, spokesperson for the ministry, said that China has indisputable sovereignty over Nanhai Zhudao, including Huangyan Dao, and their adjacent waters. "We have sovereign rights and jurisdiction over relevant waters. China's law-enforcement and rights-protection operations in waters within our jurisdiction are fully justified. In response to the recent rights-violation actions and provocations conducted by the PCG, the Chinese side took legitimate and lawful countermeasures that are professional and restrained," Jiang said. Taking journalists on-board during its so-called patrol missions to film videos and play up the "victim's narrative" has become the not-so-surprising playbook for the Philippine side. The so-called transparency and exposure campaign is not about uncovering the truth to the world, but a self-directed farce, the spokesperson told the Wednesday press conference. Xu Liping, director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Wednesday that as the rotating chair of ASEAN this year, the Philippines has repeatedly staged provocations over China's Huangyan Dao. According to Xu, such old tricks can be viewed as part of its attempts to gain the upper hand in negotiations on the code of conduct. "They are merely meant to grab international attention and only reveal that the Philippines has run out of tricks" Xu said. Commenting on the development, the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines told the Global Times in an exclusive interview on Wednesday that China's position on the South China Sea issue is consistent and clear: not an inch of our territory will be lost, and we will not take an inch of territory that does not belong to us. Huangyan Dao is an inherent territory of China. China's relevant position has long been made public and has been consistent in all previous diplomatic dialogues with the Philippine side. The Philippine side turns a blind eye to this and deliberately distorts China's position, which is utterly unconstructive. China will continue to work with the countries directly concerned to resolve disputes through negotiation and consultation, work with ASEAN countries to jointly uphold peace and stability in the South China Sea, and build the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation, the embassy told the Global Times. Historical evidence China has recently displayed solid historical evidence proving that the Philippines has previously clearly acknowledged that Huangyan Dao is not part of Philippine territory. On Saturday, the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines posted on its Facebook account a photo of a letter written by then Philippine ambassador to Germany Bienvenido A. Tan, Jr. The Manila envoy wrote in the letter to German HAM radio operator Dieter Löffler on February 5, 1990, admitting that "according to the Philippine National Mapping and Resource Information Authority," Huangyan Dao "does not fall within the territorial sovereignty of the Philippines." According to the Chinese Embassy, in 1994, in order to apply for permission to travel to China's Huangyan Dao to install a radio station, an expedition team composed of personnel from China, the Philippines, the US, Germany, Japan and other countries submitted an application to the Chinese government. In the application was the letter dated 1990 from then Philippine ambassador Tan clearly stating that the Philippines does not possess sovereignty over Huangyan Dao. Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Maritime Affairs spokesperson Rogelio Villanueva Jr. on Monday claimed the Philippines would not engage in "conjecture or speculation over a document of uncertain origin and authenticity," and asserted that the document was produced "by third parties" and is "certainly without value." Commenting on the reaction, the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines on Tuesday rejected Manila's claim that the letter is "without value." Embassy spokesperson Ji Lingpeng said in a statement posted on the embassy's X account that the letter "is not 'third-party' material from 'unknown sources' but rather proof of official acts performed by the duly accredited plenipotentiary representative of the Philippine President and by the competent Philippine government authority exercising powers granted under Philippine law, and therefore carry indisputable legal effect under international law." Chen Xidi, an assistant researcher from China Institute for Marine Affairs at the Ministry of Natural Resources, offered more solid evidence to batter Manila's false claim over Huanyan Dao. According to Chen, in 1994, a Finnish amateur radio team confirmed with the mapping and geodesy division of the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources that Map No. 25 published in 1994 defined the Philippine territorial boundary east of Huangyan Dao, explicitly placing Huangyan Dao outside Philippine territory. Chen Ping, a veteran who took part in the Huangyan Dao radio expedition in 1994, 1995, and 2007, told the Global Times on Wednesday that all documents related to Huangyan Dao from the radio expedition are authentic, complete and traceable. Relevant materials were submitted to relevant associations for review and archiving at that time. Claims by the Philippines that the letter is not credible are completely inconsistent with historical facts. The Philippines has violated the doctrine of estoppel under international law, which dictates that a state may not arbitrarily breach or deny facts it has explicitly recognized previously on territorial issues, said Ding Duo, director of the Research Center for International and Regional Studies at the National Institute for South China Sea Studies. The Philippines is, in essence, attempting to advance illegal territorial claims over Huangyan Dao, which aims to alter the established post-WWII territorial arrangements, Ding told the Global Times on Wednesday, noting that "China maintains a clear stance on the South China Sea issue, with ever-stronger will, resolve and capability to defend its territorial sovereignty, and the Philippines shall not harbor any illusions."

BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Freestyle skiing Olympic champion Xu Mengtao wore a pair of AI glasses to record her gym training ahead of the Winter Olympic Games in Milan, while maintenance staff in the city of Hangzhou in east China used this hands-free gadget to conduct inspections at EV charging stations. Additionally, an Australian vlogger shared a glimpse of his AI eyewear in a recent video, saying it has proven his most trusted travel companion in China. Once beloved only by geeks, AI glasses have now been transformed into sought-after products, drawing capital investment and sparking intense competition among Chinese tech companies. Industry observers believe that this wearable AI hardware has begun moving from a niche market toward mass consumer adoption in China. As smart wearable devices integrated with artificial intelligence, AI glasses are regarded by many as the next generation personal computing platform, following smartphones and smartwatches. Earlier this month, Alibaba rolled out its first AI glasses to be powered by its Qwen large language model, while state-owned telecom operator China Unicom unveiled its new AI eyewear. Also, photos of consumers crowding into Huawei and Xiaomi stores to try out their latest AI glasses have flooded social media. Besides tech giants and specialized smart glasses companies, other major players in China also include home appliance brands and display panel manufacturers. The entry of leading Chinese companies into the AI eyewear market is not simply a case of following a trend, but is a race for securing a share of the next-generation mobile terminal. According to Wang Junjie, vice president of smart glasses maker Hangzhou Lingban Technology, smartphones have already reached their physical limits in terms of screen size and interaction methods, leaving little room for further innovation. In contrast, smart glasses, which are close to the human brain and capable of capturing diverse forms of information, can serve as "the bridge between the physical and digital worlds." Meanwhile, as competition among AI models intensifies, the focus is moving to real-world applications. Si Weixin, an associate professor at Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology in south China, noted that many companies entering the game "aim to secure the right to speak in the next AI-driven computing era." Market researcher International Data Corporation (IDC) forecasts that Chinese manufacturers will account for 45 percent of the global AI glasses market in 2026, with shipments from Chinese brands reaching 22.67 million units worldwide, up 56.3 percent year on year. A key driver of this mass adoption is government support. In January this year, AI glasses were included in China's national subsidy program for the first time, offering buyers a 15-percent discount on purchases, capped at 500 yuan (72.6 U.S. dollars). E-commerce platform JD. com has noted that the AI eyewear market has maintained double-digit growth since 2025, and it has seen month-on-month increases following the addition of the subsidy earlier this year. Beyond policy, China's competitiveness lies in its manufacturing strength. For example, in economic powerhouse Guangdong Province in south China, popular AI glasses, AI toys and intelligent robots can achieve a rapid production cycle: design in the morning, sampling in the afternoon, mass production the next day and export within a week. According to Zeng Jinze, a senior official with Guangdong's industry and information technology department, sales of AI glasses in Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei electronics market, which is dubbed "China's hardware Silicon Valley," have surged by 80 percent over the past two months, while the number of foreign buyers has doubled in this period. Despite such rapid growth, challenges remain. Ye Qingqing, an analyst at IDC China, pointed out that the core bottleneck in the mass adoption process is found in the supply chain, particularly in the ramping up of production capacity for key components, such as more advanced chips, display screens and batteries. Ye added that current functions offered by AI glasses, like photography, translation and navigation, can be easily replicated by smartphones, giving users little incentive to move beyond curiosity to long-term use of these glasses. More efforts should focus on leveraging the unique features of such glasses, including first-person interaction, real-time sensing and proactive services, thus exploring scenarios that integrate into daily life. As AI glasses gain more capabilities, legal and privacy concerns also loom larger. Peng Jing, a lawyer from Chongqing Municipality in southwest China, warned that the ability of AI glasses to record video and audio in public challenges existing consent frameworks under China's personal information protection law. "If AI glasses lose the bottom line of privacy security, the faster they spread, the greater the social risks become," Peng said, urging future judicial practice and interpretations to clarify usage rules and set a clear "red line" for healthy industry development. Some industry leaders remain cautious about how soon AI glasses will become household products. Xu Chi, founder and CEO of homegrown smart glasses maker XREAL, likened the current state of the industry to the smartphone market in 2005 and 2006, before the launch of the iPhone. "The ecosystem is extremely fragmented," he said at a recent tech fair in Shanghai in east China. "The 'iPhone moment' for the AI glasses industry has yet to arrive and will require further technological breakthroughs and innovation," he said. Li Hongwei, founder and CEO of RayNeo, an AI glasses company located in Shenzhen, offered a more specific timeline. "I think 2025 was not the breakout year. Perhaps 2026 is the beginning, and 2027 and 2028 will be the 'iPhone moment'," Li said, suggesting that achieving mass adoption may take a bit longer. Official data shows that in 2025, the core AI industry in China had exceeded 1.2 trillion yuan in scale, while featuring more than 6,200 enterprises. AI glasses, notably, have emerged as one of the trendiest products in this booming sector. Earlier this month, China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Lecheng called AI a "powerful incremental driver" of the country's economic development, adding that China will advance "AI + manufacturing" and cultivate distinctive AI agents in 2026.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has today received accreditation by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a fund for climate finance that was established within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The accreditation will unlock new funding to protect communities worldwide from the health impacts of climate change. "Climate and health action saves lives," said Dr Ruediger Krech, Director of the department of Environment, Climate Change, One Health and Migration at WHO, "Climate financing will ensure that the health sector is prepared to meet the demands of the climate crisis without contributing further emissions to climate change." This landmark decision is the result of extensive preparations including high-level exchanges between the Director General of WHO and the Executive Director of the GCF. WHO has over 25 years of climate and health policy and technical leadership, and over 15 years of implementing climate and health programmes in over 30 countries. Extensive country presence and partnerships with ministries of health and governmental agencies position WHO as a vital partner in addressing global climate and health challenges. The combined strength of WHO and GCF will lead to direct climate and health programmes and the development of health-promoting interventions at the country level by leveraging a network of health ministries and key partners. WHO will support projects by facilitating technical partnerships, providing implementation toolkits, coordinating peer reviews and monitoring processes to ensure quality and scalability. The WHO-hosted Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH), launched in 2022, will play a critical role, including identifying co-financing for any potential investments by GCF through its network of over 200 country and partner members. There has been remarkable progress in global climate-health action since WHO’s application to the GCF in 2015. Responding to climate change was made the priority objective in WHO’s Fourteenth General Programme of Work (GPW14) for 2025-2028. In 2024 a Resolution on Climate Change and Health was adopted at the Seventh-seventh World Health Assembly and health has become a consistent focus at recent UN Climate Change Conferences (COPs), which have included dedicated Health Days and the adoption of the Belém Health Action Plan at COP30 in Brazil. “Climate financing is crucial to tackling the climate-health crisis,” said Dr Diarmid Campbell-Lendrum, Head of Climate Change, Air Quality, Energy and Health at WHO, “WHO will use this opportunity to ensure low- and middle-income countries have access to the resources needed to build climate-resilient and sustainable low-carbon health systems.” The impact of climate change on humanity is well established, with the recognition of health impacts of climate change growing in the international community. Health is identified as a priority in 91% of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), national climate action plans by each country under the Paris Agreement, but only a few NDCs specify actions to maximize health benefits from climate adaptation and/or mitigation. According to estimates, just 2% of adaptation funding and only 0.5% of multilateral climate funding go to health, leaving the health sector with the greatest unmet demand. WHO aims to address these needs for climate finance support and empower national health ministries to develop climate-resilient health systems, reduce emissions and bolster climate-health action across sectors. WHO’s accreditation to the GCF catalyses a paradigm shift by embedding health resilience and health equity into climate finance, thereby transforming how climate adaptation and mitigation are designed, implemented, and evaluated. WHO’s leadership in global health, combined with its operational capacity and normative authority, positions it to oversee and supervise impactful, multisectoral projects.

A worker operates in the production workshop of China Construction Equipment & Engineering Co in Nanjing of East China's Jiangsu Province on January 19, 2026. Photo: VCGChina's GDP grew at 5 percent year-on-year to 140.19 trillion yuan ($20.13 trillion) in 2025, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Monday, meeting the annual growth target of around 5 percent and surpassing the 140-trillion-yuan threshold for the first time. Observers said the upbeat data underscored the resilience and vitality of the world's second-largest economy despite multiple downward pressures. They added that such growth momentum will continue to position China as a beacon of stability and the locomotive of the world economy. While the data represents a resounding success to the conclusion of China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, it also lays a solid foundation for a head start this year - also the opening year of China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), analysts said, noting that China's economic strength will give the country and the global community greater confidence to navigate an increasingly complex, volatile geopolitical environment and rising waves of trade protectionism in the years to come. The economy in the 14th Five-Year Plan period was marked by four consecutive leaps - surpassing 110 trillion yuan, 120 trillion yuan, 130 trillion yuan, and 140 trillion yuan, Kang Yi, head of NBS, said at a press briefing of the State Council Information Office on Monday on the release of the economic data for 2025. The economy expanded 4.5 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter last year, data from the NBS showed, easing from 4.8 percent in the third quarter, following 5.2 percent in the second quarter and 5.4 percent in the first quarter. When asked to comment on China's economic performance last year, Kang used four keywords: "stable, progressive, innovative, and resilient." "China's economy has continued to demonstrate strong resilience, navigating instability while achieving both quantitative leaps and qualitative improvements," said Kang, noting that the country is projected to contribute around 30 percent to global economic growth, serving as a stabilizer for world supply chains. Yao Jingyuan, a special researcher of the Counselor's Office of the State Council, told the Global Times on Monday that achieving 5-percent GDP growth and crossing the output milestone of 140 trillion yuan marks the successful completion of the goals listed in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). Meanwhile, the robust figures have laid a crucial foundation for a strong start to the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) and for resolutely marching toward China's second centenary goal. 'Unprecedented' challenges Based on the Global Times' calculation, the 5-percent increase in China's GDP also translates to a net growth of 5.38 trillion yuan ($771.73 billion) in economic volume last year, which is more than the entire GDP of Belgium of $671.37 billion in 2024 by World Bank metric. Yao said the transcript is by no means easy, as 2025 was an "extraordinary year" during which the internal and external challenges facing the Chinese economy were unprecedented in both scale and intensity. "Externally, trade protectionism has been on the rise, and de-globalization trends have reemerged. In particular, there have been renewed attempts to contain and suppress China's development, with the US wielding the tariff stick once again. Internally, China has been dealing with pressures from insufficient demand, an imbalance between supply and demand, as well as the pains associated with economic transformation and upgrading," Yao said. The resilient economic fundamentals, which vividly demonstrated throughout last year's development trajectory, will provide greater policy maneuver and inspire stronger confidence for a robust start in implementing the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) in 2026, analysts said. Tian Yun, a Beijing-based economist, told the Global Times on Monday that the standout developments in new growth drivers last year closely align with the priorities of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), which places strong emphasis on achieving greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology and steering the development of new quality productive forces. "So, 2025 served as a critical bridge in deepening this strategic layout," he added. In the next five years, China is expected to play a greater and more indispensable global role in the face of fragmented global supply chain, intensifying global tech race and rising geopolitical tensions, analysts noted. "The resilient and stable growth logged by the Chinese economy has provided a crucial safeguard for the sustainable development of the world economy. On the other hand, China stands today as the world's most stable supply chain base and the primary production hub for industrial goods. And this position will become more evident in the years to come," Tian said. According to Yao, China's 5-percent growth rate clearly places the country at the forefront among the world's major economies. An IMF report released on Monday forecasted that global growth will hover around 3.3 percent in 2025. The economic expansion of the world's second-largest economy has also caught the limelight of global mainstream media outlets. A Guardian article cited an economist as saying that "navigating a fraught geopolitical landscape remained a 'major wildcard,' but that China's economy should continue to grow through 2026." The Associated Press said in a report that China's economy expanded at a 5 percent annual pace in 2025, buoyed by strong exports despite US tariffs. Economic highlights In 2025, China's value-added industrial output rose by 5.9 percent compared to the same period in 2024, while fixed-asset investment declined by 3.8 percent year-on-year, NBS data showed. China's retail sales of consumer goods jumped 3.7 percent year-on-year last year. Hu Qimu, deputy secretary-general of Forum 50 for Digital-Real Economies Integration, highlighted the development of such industries as high-tech and advanced manufacturing, which shows that the development of China's new quality productive forces has been gearing up and become a prominent driver of the economy in 2025. Last year, the value added of high-tech manufacturing grew by 9.4 percent year-on-year, outpacing overall growth rate by 3.5 percentage points. The output of industrial robots increased by 28 percent, and new energy vehicles rose by 25.1 percent, data from NBS showed. In the fourth quarter, China's growth in retail sales also stabilized, boosted by a slew of measures that stimulated consumer demand as well as the vibrant spending during the eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, analysts said. Tian pointed out that the consumer demand has gotten off a good start this year, with notable release of consumer demands during the New Year's Day holidays, and is expected to continue rising steadily through the upcoming Spring Festival holidays. Since the beginning of 2026, Chinese authorities have released a bunch of initiatives that aim at spurring consumption and expanding domestic demand, which analysts believe are set to "create favorable conditions for a promising start" in 2026. "Those are clear signals delivered to the market that the Chinese government will act proactively and front-load its efforts. It is forecasted that more targeted measures will be followed to address persisting economic challenges, which will all help to bolster market confidence and enhance overall social expectation this year," Hu said. A number of economists and global financial institutions are confident on China's economic prospects. The IMF report released on Monday has revised the growth forecast for China upward by 0.3 percentage point to 4.5 percent, "reflecting the lower US effective tariff rates on Chinese goods as a result of the yearlong trade truce agreed to in November and stimulus measures that are assumed to be implemented over two years." Chinese economy is projected by Goldman Sachs Research to grow by 4.8 percent in 2026 as exports increase and the downward pressure from a slowing property market lessens, according to a report the US investment bank released on its website. The country is expected to set its growth target in March at the annual "two sessions."

When a water-treatment plant outside Denver discovered an algae problem in its pipes, it did not call an engineering firm. It called the students. The aquatic robotics team at the Innovation Center at St. Vrain Valley Schools in Longmont, Colorado, sent underwater robots into the facility, collected data, identified the algae species and helped eradicate it. The plant now contracts with the student team for quarterly checkups. Neighboring towns have started calling, too. This is not a simulation or a classroom exercise conjured up to look like real work. It is real work, and it reflects a broader shift underway in districts. Increasingly, schools are building career learning pathways that connect students directly with professional challenges, industry mentors and, in some cases, a paycheck. The Case for Real Work The urgency behind these efforts is hard to ignore. A 2023 review from the American Institutes for Research, drawing on two decades of studies, found that career and technical education participation has statistically significant positive impacts on academic achievement, high school completion, employability skills and college readiness. The question districts are now wrestling with is not whether to offer career pathways, but whether those pathways lead anywhere real. Policy leaders are paying attention. The Education Commission of the States has identified building aligned career pathways and removing barriers to economic opportunity as one of its top priorities through 2027. At St. Vrain, Assistant Superintendent of Innovation Joe McBreen has spent years trying to answer that question through a program known as project teams. After school each day, roughly 264 students log in at the district’s Innovation Center and begin work as paid district employees, billing hours against accounts for actual clients. Students can join a drone show team, a cybersecurity unit, an AI development group or a dozen other teams, rotating among them as their interests evolve. “It’s low threat, high reward,” says McBreen. “Students get paid, grow their network, develop soft skills and test drive careers. And if they get into a team and realize it’s not for them, there’s real value in that, too.” The model relies heavily on industry mentors who bring in real work rather than invented classroom projects. Damon Brown, a senior cybersecurity adviser for the U.S. Department of State focused on Ecuador, mentored seven St. Vrain students on a complex assignment. He asked them to design the architecture for a cyber intelligence fusion center using open-source tools — work that could have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if contracted from a professional firm. “The students knocked it out of the park,” says Brown. They built the system architecture, wrote user manuals, recommended equipment and conducted a threat analysis of countries surrounding Ecuador. Brown was so impressed he is now hiring six St. Vrain interns. “This experience binds people together,” he says. The program also has a way of growing in unexpected directions. After one student’s grandparent was victimized by a cybercrime, the cybersecurity team created an awareness curriculum for senior citizens. They taught five classes to 24 senior citizens in the first year; the second session was standing room only. Senior facilities now pay the students to come in and teach. Meanwhile, the drone team flies commercial shows for companies across the country on Friday afternoons, billing clients at rates few drone pilots in the country can match. One former member is now studying aerospace engineering and using money from drone flying to help pay for college. Taking the Model Out West St. Vrain’s work has drawn attention from educators around the country, some of whom are adapting pieces of the model to fit their own communities. Kris Hagel, chief information officer of Peninsula School District in Washington state, visited the Innovation Center and came away convinced he could build something similar. Two years ago, Peninsula launched a paid drone internship program, starting with seven students and gradually expanding. Students work alongside industry partners while learning how to navigate FAA regulations, program autonomous flight paths and repair drones. “When you’re willing to look at what’s cutting edge and think innovatively without being constrained by traditional systems, you can create opportunities for kids that transcend what we think of as traditional education,” says Hagel. “This program has become so much more than I thought was possible.” The district partnered with Firefly Drone Systems, one of the few American drone manufacturers, to train students and help them operate drone shows. The program also includes multiple roles beyond piloting, including marketing, animation design and equipment maintenance. Hagel envisions a future where students studying business management hire other students to operate the program. A skilled drone operator who leaves high school with the capital to purchase equipment can enter a six-figure career almost immediately, says Hagel. Finding the Problem First Not every district is building toward robotics contracts or drone shows. For Michele Davis, CTE department chair at Metropolitan School District of Steuben County in Indiana, the real-world pathway is entrepreneurship. Working with the StartED Up Foundation, Davis guides students through a three-year sequence: identifying an actual problem, developing a solution, building out the business model and presenting it to real audiences. Students take “opportunity walks” around the school, documenting everyday frustrations and brainstorming solutions. They learn how to market their ideas professionally by practicing elevator pitches, presenting case studies to various audiences and explaining their ideas to elementary school students. “Opportunities are everywhere,” says Davis. The ideas that emerge can be surprisingly practical. One student designed a reversible outfit to solve a quick-change problem in theater productions. Another class developed a mobile trailer concept that could help unhoused people access hygiene services. Beyond the business concepts themselves, Davis says the program focuses heavily on communication skills and confidence. “We get students comfortable doing things that are normally uncomfortable,” she says. A Credential, Not Just a Class At Suffern Central School District in Rockland County, New York, Superintendent P. Erik Gundersen has taken yet another approach. Through a partnership with the League of Innovative Schools and curriculum provider Paradigm, the district launched a three-year cybersecurity certification pathway embedded directly into the high school. About 60 students are currently enrolled. The program was designed to reach students who might not otherwise see themselves in a cybersecurity career. The district actively recruited students from immigrant communities and others who are new to the U.S. Students work in a “sandbox” environment that simulates real cyber incidents, allowing them to practice identifying threats and responding to attacks. “The means to send a kid to college is not as great as it was, and a lot of what we’re reading questions the importance of a college education,” says Gundersen. Those economic realities, he says, are pushing districts to rethink how they prepare students for the workforce. Career credentials embedded with traditional high schools can open doors for students who may not otherwise have clear pathways into high-skill industries. Education That Looks Like Life Across these programs, the details vary widely, but the philosophy is the same: Authentic experience is not a supplement to education. It is education. As McBreen says, “I encourage districts to expand their vision. Anyone can do this. Start small.”
