At the foot of the Helan Mountain, final touches are being put on the Huinong-Shizuishan section of the Wuhai-Maqin Expressway (referred to Wuhai-Maqin North Expressway), which is paved with 3 million tons of industrial solid waste in its construction. Workers are fastening guardrail bolts, the rhythmic clatter of wrenches against metal resonating across the vast roadway, while electrical engineers are meticulously installing equipment in the expressway's service areas. Designated as one of the first national demonstration projects for green and low-carbon advanced technologies, the highway is set to be completed and open to traffic by the end of July.
The Wuhai-Maqin North Expressway extends 57.3 kilometers with a total investment of 5.645 billion yuan. As driving along the newly paved highway, the dark asphalt road surface stretches smoothly like a mirror. Ye Feng, Director of the Technical Management Department of Ningxia Wuhai-Maqin North Expressway Management Co., Ltd., gently runs his hand along the guardrail and remarks that industrial waste products such as fly ash, coal gangue, and steel slag—once sources of pollution—have now been become as road-building materials.
Numbers are witnessing green change. The Wuhai-Maqin North Expressway has incorporated over 3 million tons of industrial solid waste into its construction, saving 3.88 million tons of sand, aggregates, and cement while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 100,000 tons. Green principles are embedded in every detail: the project route was deliberately routed around the Gaomiao Lake Wetland, passing through the gap between the wetland and the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway. During construction, eco-friendly subgrade materials were used, minimizing the need for soil borrowing and reducing the footprint of excavation sites by over 200 mu (133,33 square metres).
Once operational, the Wuhai-Maqin North Expressway will collaborate with the Beijing-Xizang Expressway to establish a dual north-south transportation corridor spanning Ningxia and linking Inner Mongolia with Gansu. Truck drivers shuttling between Zhongwei and Huinong have been looking forward to this for a long time. "Previously, traveling to Zhongwei was cumbersome, involving constant transfers between expressways and national roads. When this highway opens, we can drive directly to the Zhongwei Industrial Park without interruptions," noted one driver.
