Foreign media: gold trading diverges as global investors'expectations vary widely
[Global Times Comprehensive Financial Report] On 30 June, according to Bloomberg News, American investors who were keen to snap up gold bars and coins are selling these assets now. On the other hand, Asian investors continue to increase their purchases, which shows that the outlook for the economy from investors around the world is completely different.
The behavior of these US retail investors runs counter to broader market trends. Wealthier investors, Sovereign Wealth Funds and central banks are still actively buying gold as a safe-haven asset. At the same time, Asian gold buyers have abandoned gold jewelry in favor of gold bars and coins.
The U.S. market is full of gold bars and coins, and some precious metals dealers have cut premiums to their lowest levels in six years to spur sales. Moreover, when investors sell gold, they now have to pay a fee to distributor. Precious metals distributor Money Metals Exchange charges $20 on top of the in stock price for an ounce of American Eagle gold coins currently, compared with a premium of $75 four years ago. Today, investors have to pay about $20 to the online trading platform when selling gold, and in 2021, they will get an extra $121 for selling gold.
The supply exceeds demand of gold bars and coins has led to a slump in sales of newly minted precious metal products. Take the US Mint's American Eagle gold coin for example, a barometer of retail demand. Sales plunged more than 70% from the same period in May last year.
According to data of Metals Focus, Demand for gold bars and coins has continued to decline over the past three years in North America and Western Europe, while demand in the other regions of the world has risen. Last year, the gap was the largest since records began in 2014. The consulting firm said the gap persisted in the first quarter of 2025, mainly driven by the sell-off in the U.S. market.
Brian Lan, a Singapore-based precious metals distributor, managing director of GoldSilver Central, said investors in Southeast Asia, who lack other investment options, have begun to view gold as a strategic asset.
Wall Street banks are divided on whether the gold prices rally is over. Goldman Sachs reiterated its forecast that the price of gold will reach $4000 next year, Morgan Stanley expects the price of gold to reach $3800 by the end of this year, and Citigroup believes that the price of gold will fall below $3000 next year.
