Clare Dyer The BMJ A locum consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology who was accused of a catalogue of clinical failings has been struck off the UK medical register after he repeatedly expressed contempt for the proceedings and declined to attend when his former patients were testifying. Malay Haldar, who qualified in India in 1987, was charged at a medical practitioners’ tribunal with misconduct in his treatment of four patients while working as a locum in Harlow in 2016 and in Birmingham in 2018. He carried out a perineal reconstruction on a hysterectomy patient when she had explicitly refused it, explaining that she was a widow and not interested in a sex life. It left her with difficulty in passing urine normally. She reported him to police. While performing a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy on a patient with severe endometriosis, he mistakenly removed part of her ureter and was found guilty of inadequate pre-op consultation and poor decision making in managing the bleed. The patient, a nurse, later described her shock at the quality of her care. In another case he performed an instrumental delivery and episiotomy without informed consent, during which he was found guilty of several failings, including conducting the delivery without adequate precautions. A fourth patient was left with leaking faeces and loss of bowel control after Halder carried out a forceps delivery without an episiotomy. She was operated on without adequate pain relief and suffered a 3rd degree tear and postpartum haemorrhage. Haldar failed to recognise the haemorrhage or the tear in a timely manner, or the fact that he had put a suture in her rectum. He failed to call for assistance or escalate her care. He was also found to have said to her that if he had met her sooner, she would have been having his baby. The tribunal held that Haldar’s record keeping was deficient in all four cases. Three of the patients gave witness statements describing their trauma and psychological suffering but Haldar did not attend on those occasions. “The explanation he gave for his absence appeared to relate to his inability to countenance those witnesses in his presence,” said Angus Macpherson, chairing the tribunal. “In short, during the factual enquiry, Dr Haldar maintained his position of not accepting any part of the GMC case at all.” Haldar attended only part of the hearing and did not give evidence, but instead bombarded the medical practitioners’ tribunal service and the GMC with emails throughout his proceedings, said Macpherson. “The only consistent behaviour he demonstrated was outrage that the case was brought against him by the GMC,” he said. After the tribunal had made findings on the facts, it was told by the GMC of a previous disciplinary case in Australia, where Haldar received a caution in 2011 for what Macpherson called “very similar failings.” Haldar’s clinical failings “could be capable of remediation,” said Macpherson. “However, Dr Haldar has not shown any insight nor appetite to tackle them. Moreover, the evidence before the tribunal does not suggest that he has begun to appreciate the nature and extent of his misconduct.” Macpherson added, “Dr Haldar’s conduct and behaviour is fundamentally incompatible with that of a registered medical practitioner.” The erasure will take place after 28 days unless Haldar appeals.

The catering sector, a major pillar of China's consumption-driven economy, continues to show strong signs of recovery and growth despite ongoing challenges. As of now, China boasts over 15.568 million active and well-established catering-related enterprises, including 406,000 new ones being registered in 2025, China National Radio (CNP) reported on Monday, citing company information website Tianyancha. Some Western media reported that China's dining industry is under strain, with nearly 3 million restaurant closures in 2024 due to economic pressures. Reuters reported that the number of dissolved catering companies peaked at a historic high of almost 3 million nationwide, citing data from Qichacha. Over the past five years, the number of registrations for catering-related enterprises has shown a year-on-year increasing trend, reaching its peak in 2024, said the CNR report. The figures indicated that China's catering industry is maintaining a stable growth amid complex landscape, Yang Liu, president of the China Cuisine Association, told the Global Times on Monday. While the Chinese catering market faces fierce competition and consumption downgrade, Yang noted that overall expansion and strong market potential remain as highlighted by the continuous growth in catering consumption, driven by holiday spending and the debut economy in the first two months of the year. Yang's remarks follow the sector's strong recovery in 2024 when the number of registered catering enterprises reached 3.57 million, bringing the total number to 16.806 million. The figure hit a record high last year, according to an industry report. In 2024, China's catering consumption reached 5.57 trillion yuan ($768 billion), accounting for more than 11 percent of total retail sales of consumer goods and making it the largest single category, official data showed. In the first two months of 2025, sales revenue of the gastronomy sector recorded sales of about 979.2 billion yuan, displaying an increase of around 4.3 percent compared with the same period of the previous year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. "The figures are impressive, indicating that we are on a positive development trajectory," Yang said. With new consumption-boosting measures in place, catering consumption is set to enter a new phase of growth. Meanwhile, as spring brings warmer weather, several Chinese cities such as Chengdu and Shanghai are launching a series of promotional activities to spur local spending. Local delicacies and night economy zones are at the forefront of these efforts, competing to introduce attractive consumption-boosting packages. "These initiatives have significantly invigorated the catering market. Both the supply and demand sides are experiencing robust growth, with businesses reporting increased foot traffic and higher sales," Yang noted. In recent years, the central government has introduced a series of measures to support high-quality growth in the catering sector, pledging to further enhance food safety, improve the skills of industry professionals and help more Chinese restaurants explore the international market. China also issued a new plan to boost consumption, pledging to enhance catering service quality and support local specialty cuisine. The plan, jointly announced by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, was reported by Xinhua on March 16.
SpaceX launched its third mission of the year for the United States' spy satellite agency today (March 24), the 19th anniversary of the company's first-ever liftoff. A Falcon 9 rocket rose off a pad at Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station today at 1:48 p.m. EDT (1748 GMT) on the NROL-69 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). It was 19 years to the day after SpaceX's first launch, which sent a Falcon 1 rocket skyward from Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific. That mission failed, as did the next two Falcon 1 flights. The rocket bounced back, acing its fourth and fifth missions in September 2008 and July 2009, respectively, before being retired in favor of the Falcon 9., which debuted in June 2010. It's unclear what NROL-69 is sending up. The NRO provided no information beyond a brief description of the mission's emblem, which shows an origami-style hummingbird hovering in front of a distant wetland, along with the words "Numquan hibernare." "The Hummingbird illustrates the speed and agility with which we provide an advantage to the nation and its allies," the NRO's mission description reads. "'Numquan hibernare' is Latin for 'Never hibernate.' Our bird is ever vigilant." We also don't know what orbit NROL-69 is targeting. SpaceX didn't provide that information, and the company cut off its webcast at the NRO's request about nine minutes after launch, following the Falcon 9 first stage's successful touchdown back at Cape Canaveral. It was the second liftoff and landing for this particular booster, according to SpaceX's mission description. Related: SpaceX launches 7th batch of next-gen spy satellites for US government (video, photos) SpaceX has launched two other NRO missions so far in 2025 — NROL-153 in January and NROL-57 this past Friday (March 21). The company set a new rocket reuse record on NROL-57, flying the same Falcon 9 first stage for the second time in just nine days. Both NROL-153 and NROL-57 were dedicated to building out the NRO's "proliferated architecture," a large constellation of relatively small, cost-effective satellites that's designed to increase resilience, capability and responsiveness, according to the agency. That strategy is something of a departure for the NRO, which has historically relied on a small number of highly capable but expensive satellites. The proliferated architecture spacecraft are thought to be modified versions of SpaceX's Starlink internet satellites, which the company produces in bulk.
Smart home appliances are rapidly becoming the new darlings of young consumers, thanks to the accelerated application of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) in the home appliance industry. A buyer learns about a smart refrigerator of Hisense at the 135th session of the China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province. (Xinhua/Lu Hanxin) According to international data forecasts, the shipment volume of smart home appliances in the Chinese market is expected to reach 281 million units by 2025, representing a 7.8 percent year-on-year increase. At an electronics store in Beijing's Chaoyang district, a young couple born after 2000 found themselves captivated by a smart robot vacuum cleaner. A salesperson explained that the device responds to voice commands and features an efficient cleaning engine that precisely designs routes to quickly clean an entire home. Using 3D multi-dimensional obstacle avoidance technology, it navigates without bumping into furniture. The couple were satisfied with the vacuum cleaner, as it looked impressive and could actually understand human commands, which would help ease their burden of cleaning significantly. A shopping guide at the store said that network-connected home appliances with a reservation mode and remote-control capabilities are top sellers, particularly among young consumers. "Today's young people prioritize convenience, multi-functionality, and technological sophistication when purchasing home appliances. They're highly receptive to smart home appliances," the shopping guide said. As "digital natives" who grew up immersed in the internet and digital devices, young consumers are becoming the main buyers of smart appliances. Survey data shows that over 90 percent of China's smart appliance consumers are under 40 years old. A 29-year-old woman surnamed Wang who purchased a new apartment last year chose to outfit her entire home with smart appliances. "Through my smartphone app, I can control my air conditioner, air purifier, water heater, washing machine, and other home appliances. I can remotely operate my washer and dryer or turn on the air conditioning before I arrive home. When I get home, I just say 'I'm home' to my smart speaker, which automatically turns on lights in the living room and plays music," Wang said. A staff member introduces a smart home appliance of a company in Ningxiang, central China's Hunan Province. (Xinhua/Chen Zeguo) These smart devices have saved her considerable time and energy, making her life more convenient and efficient. During the 2024 "618" shopping festival, the transaction volume for smart wall-mounted toilets, smart leather beds, smart shower systems, and energy-efficient flat-screen TVs on Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com increased by over 100 percent year on year. Young consumers are a crucial driving force behind the development of smart home appliances, said Hong Yong, an associate researcher at the e-commerce research institute of the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce. Hong added that smart appliances have quickly integrated into young people's daily lives, becoming assistants in their pursuit of a better lifestyle. Smart home appliances simplify household chores and improve efficiency, aligning with young people's pursuit of convenience. According to the 2024 China Youth Consumption Trends Report, smart home appliances saw their transaction volume increase by several times last year. Young consumers particularly favor robot vacuum cleaners, smart washing machines, and intelligent kitchen equipment, which ease the burden of household chores and give them more time to spend with family and pursue their interests. Home appliance industry analyst Liang Zhenpeng explained that the "lazy economy" is flourishing and smart home appliances are becoming increasingly diverse and affordable. Many young people hope to leverage technological advances to reduce the time they spend on household chores. In addition, the technological and innovative features of smart home appliances are major draws for tech-savvy youth who readily embrace new technologies. The energy-saving and environmentally friendly attributes of smart home appliances resonate with young consumers' green consumption concepts. According to a report on Gen Z's home appliance consumption, when purchasing home appliances, 99.25 percent of Gen Z users focus on the energy consumption and carbon emission levels of devices, with nearly 70 percent prioritizing low-energy products. Smart home appliances are becoming symbols of a new lifestyle for young consumers, not only bringing convenience but also reflecting their pursuit of advanced technology and a personalized, green lifestyle. While the evolution of consumer demands and technological advancements drive the upgrade of smart home appliances, firms in the home appliance industry are adjusting their product strategies according to young people's preferences to launch home appliances that better match their personalities and pace of life. Meanwhile, many home appliance brands are actively offering solutions for whole-house smart home appliances by targeting young consumers' pursuit of intelligent living. In the future, home appliances will become more intelligent and energy-saving thanks to the widespread application of AI, IoT, and environmental protection technologies, Hong said, adding that a sound system of whole-house smart home appliances will provide better user experiences.

Is it a plane? Is it a satellite? Is it a galaxy? Is it aliens? A strange blue spiral lit up the skies over Europe on Monday night (March 24), causing residents of the U.K. and other European countries like Croatia, Poland, and Hungary to flood social media with photos and videos, along with requests to identify this weird light. Some users even speculated that the spiral could be the work of aliens! Space.com can reveal the identity of the object behind this spectacular event, and unfortunately (possibly reassuringly), rather than being the work of extraterrestrial visitors, it's a bit more down to Earth. The cause of the strange blue spiral is actually a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that blasted off from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 1:48 p.m. EDT (1748 GMT) on Monday. The rocket was carrying the secretive NROL-69 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The spiral appeared over Europe at around 4 pm EDT (2000 GMT) and persisted in the sky for a few minutes. The X feed of Shanghai Daily shared a stunning timelapse video of the spiral appearing and expanding over the skies of Croatia. As the above post indicates, the strange blue whirlpool, which to many social media users resembled a spiral galaxy, is an example of what some people call a "SpaceX spiral." These structures develop after the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket has separated from its first-stage booster. As the upper stage continues towards space, the lower stage falls back to Earth. As this happens, the booster stage begins to spiral, simultaneously dumping what remains of its fuel. Due to the altitude at which this fuel is ditched, it freezes instantly, preserving a swirling pattern created by the booster's motion. When light reflects from this structure, it creates these strange-looking manifestations in the sky. X user Merlin Tomkins captured the wonder and mystery of this object in images posted to his X feed. X user Shu from Wolverhampton in England was slightly more concerned about the spiral manifestation in the sky, writing on his X feed: "So it seems many of us across Europe (I am in Wolves UK) just witnessed an object in the sky, I thought it was the moon behind cloud at first until it started moving with spiraling light emanating from it... any ideas?" Physicist and science communicator Brian Cox took to his X feed to reassure U.K. and European citizens like Merlin and Shu that the event they witnessed was associated with the SpaceX launch earlier that day. Though the spiral has a terrestrial origin, that doesn't mean its manifestation in the sky is any less spectacular in appearance. Daniel Puchalski posted images of the blue spiral in the Facebook group Smartphone Astrophotography, commenting: "Captured this stunning sight of a Falcon 9 fuel dump over Poland! Taken handheld with a Xiaomi 14 Ultra. An unforgettable view!" He also shared the incredible photos with Space.com. Astronomer Allan Trow caught the spiral with an icy white hue over the sky of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Wales. He shared the image via his @AlDarkSkyWales X account. X user matts shared an incredible video of the SpaceX spiral gradually fading from the sky over the course of around 3 minutes. SpaceX spirals like this one seen over the U.K. and Europe remain fairly rare, but with Falcon 9 and other rocket launches becoming more common, they are likely to soon become a more familiar sight. Some people may be disappointed by the rational explanation for this spiral light in the night sky. The aforementioned Shu responded to a commentator discussing the spiral's true identity: "I wish it was an invasion; I could use the time off work." We feel you Shu!

A senior citizen wearing an exoskeleton walking aid device shops at a market in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, Feb. 24, 2025. (RoboCT/Handout via Xinhua) HANGZHOU, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The cyborgs of science fiction, once symbols of superhuman abilities, are now powering China's elderly care revolution as the nation's silver economy surges. An exoskeleton walking aid device, designed by startup RoboCT located in Hangzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province, can make hiking easier for seniors by counteracting the weight of five bottles of water with each leg lift. RoboCT plans to launch its latest innovation late this month. It is priced at an affordable 2,000 yuan (about 276 U.S. dollars). In China's eastern tech hub, more firms like RoboCT are developing robotics aimed at assisting elderly mobility. RoboCT's engineers noticed that many elderly people walk with bent backs, take small steps and use waist braces in nursing homes, and so they focused the device's assistance efforts on the waist, back and hips. "The product assists with hip flexion and stabilizes the lumbar spine to help seniors walk with longer strides, quicker steps and greater stability," said Yan Hai, RoboCT's product director, in an interview with Xinhua. Inspired by tendon mechanics, the battery-free device, which weighs 2 kg, is worn around the hips and above the knees, capturing and storing some of the energy generated by the body's own efforts, before releasing it to assist with walking. "Exoskeleton robotics support seniors with weaker muscles, enhancing mobility through force compression and release, rotation speed and angle adjustments," said Yan. Even physically fit young people can get 30 percent assistance when wearing it. "China's exoskeleton robots, set for significant growth in the field of elderly care, have mastered key technologies like ergonomic design, motion recognition and self-learning AI that dynamically refine movement patterns," said Chen Zhiran, director of the Digital Economy Research Office at Zhejiang Development and Planning Institute. China's increasing elderly population faces widening unmet mobility needs, resulting in overburdened rehabilitation therapists and an annual shortfall in terms of rehab therapy graduates. Latest data shows that by the end of 2024, China's population aged 60 and above had reached 310 million -- accounting for roughly 22 percent of its total population. A growing number of Chinese firms have seen vast business opportunities stemming from the increasing aging population. The country's silver economy is emerging as a major growth driver, and is currently valued at 7 trillion yuan. According to a survey from data analysis provider iiMedia Research, China's silver economy is expected to reach a scale of 30 trillion yuan by 2035. Notably, enterprises are leveraging emerging technology such as AI and robotics to pioneer a new consumption scenario tailored to the elderly. Guided by a Chinese proposal, the International Electrotechnical Commission has released a global standard for elderly-care robots. To tap into the growing silver economy, tech firms are learning to focus on solving real elderly user challenges while employing cutting-edge technologies. Designed for elderly convenience, RoboCT's walking assist device takes just 20 seconds to put on and doesn't require smartphone operation. The firm is also planning to launch customized versions of this device for hemiplegic patients and spinal cord injury patients. Bustling scenes at the opening day of the first global store of "Yiwu Selection", a new grouping of overseas brands in Yiwu, East China's Zhejiang Province, on January 10, 2025 (Photo/Yiwu Official) China will enhance consumption capacity and increase urban and rural residents' income on the basis of promoting economic growth and improving productivity, so as to ensure that consumers have more money to spend, Han Wenxiu, Han Wenxiu, executive deputy director of the Office of the Central Committee for Financial and Economic Affairs, said on Sunday, according to a report by the China Central Television (CCTV). He made the remarks at this year's China Development Forum (CDF), which opened in Beijing on Sunday under the theme "Unleashing Development Momentum for Stable Growth of Global Economy." Han is also the director of the Office of the Central Rural Work Leading Group. Overall, China will adopt a comprehensive approach to expand consumption, continuously fostering a mutually reinforcing and complementary dynamic between high-quality development and high-quality life, according to Han. Other measures include optimizing the income distribution structure, and raising the share of residents' income in national income, Han said, while stressing that efforts will also be made to expand service consumption, the CCTV report noted. During the address, Han also elaborated on the key areas for expanding consumption. He noted that China will actively develop the "debut economy," or consumption driven by product launches, flagship store openings, new service rollouts, and the creation of innovative business models and technologies, as well as the health economy, ice and snow economy, and silver economy, according to the report. The country will promote cultural and tourism industry as a major pillar industry, and create more high-quality service consumption products and scenarios, so that Chinese consumers could access to a variety of mid- to high-end services, Han said. Observers said that Han's remarks sent a strong signal on the Chinese policymakers' determination to make consumption a key driver of economic growth. This year's Government Work Report has positioned "vigorously boosting consumption and investment returns and stimulating domestic demand across the board" as a top priority. China should move faster to address inadequate domestic demand, particularly insufficient consumption, and make domestic demand the main engine and anchor of economic growth, according to the Government Work Report. On March 16, China made public a plan for special initiatives to boost consumption. The plan aims to vigorously boost consumption, stimulate domestic demand across the board, and increase spending power by increasing earnings and reducing financial burdens. In the first two months, retail sales of consumer goods - a major indicator of the country's consumption strength - climbed 4 percent year-on-year, 0.5 percentage points higher than the same period in 2024.
