Review: ‘Harley Quinn’ Season 2 Fixes The Big Problems With The Series

It’s incredibly satisfying when a show recognizes its own flaws and works to course correct. That’s what season 2 of the DC Universe series Harley Quinn, which dropped its season finale this morning, did. While I enjoyed season 1 immensely, it also had huge flaws to the point where it was often offensive (I wrote about that extensively in my review). While the show still has a ways to go, season 2 made some big strides to course correct. It’s also a damn good time.

The season started off rather dubiously (my review was pretty skeptical) with Gotham basically being jettisoned from the United States for being completely overrun by villains, criminals, and destruction. It’s free reign in the city for the remaining villains, and Harley (The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco) is pushed by her crew to try to take it over, even after the newly formed Injustice League beats her to the punch. While she spends a while going after the Injustice League, which is rather fun, the season evolves into a story about Harley and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), and what they actually want (more on that later).

I complained last season that there weren’t enough female characters in the show...and there still aren’t. But we do get some great additions in the forms of Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl (Briana Cuoco) and Catwoman (Sanaa Lathan). Harley’s crew still needs more women - it still only has her and Ivy in it - but at least we get rid of Dr. Psycho (Tony Hale). Psycho was revealed in season 1 to be a rapist, so it always baffled me that they would ever align him with our heroine, but finally, this season, he becomes the enemy we all knew him to be. Adios Psycho, no one’s going to miss you.

Batgirl proves herself to be the most capable teenager on the planet (please continue to give us more Batgirl), but Jim Gordon (Christopher Meloni) winds up being the most offensive character this season (I mostly remember him being just sad and pathetic last season). I’ve really had it with the offensive jokes that are probably meant to be satire, but just wind up being distasteful. There’s less of them this season, but still.

Meanwhile, the standout episode “There’s No Place to Go But Down” actually had some great ideas about prison reform (except for putting prisoners in a pit in the ground) that were about rehabilitation instead of punishment. It also proved once and for all that Bane (James Adomian) is a sweetie, and of all the villains, just really needs a good hug.

This season also doesn’t center all of Harley’s decisions around the Joker (Alan Tudyk) like season 1 did (although he gets an interesting twist this season as well). We get to see Harley learn to make her own decisions for her own reasons. There’s a lot of personal growth for Harley this season, including being a better friend to Ivy. Episode 9, “Bachelorette,” is one of the standout episodes where Harley not only plans a luxury spa weekend on Themyscira for Ivy’s bachelorette party, but also a plot to take down Lex Luthor’s (Giancarlo Esposito) corporatization of the island. It shows that Harley really knows Ivy, and is tuned into what she wants.

I feel bad for Kite Man (Matt Oberg), who’s really good to Ivy, and they’re actually pretty cute together, but let’s be real, a Harley-Ivy romance is what we’ve all been dreaming about. They literally ride off into the sunset together in the finale, which is centered around Kite Man and Ivy’s wedding, so let’s see how that goes. Of course, Kite Man and Ivy also just don’t make sense long term. As it’s pretty well put during Kite Man’s vows, he wants a basic family life, which is really not Ivy. Personally, I’m hoping for Ivy to get back in touch with her eco-terrorist roots next season.

The truth is, the next season (if it gets renewed) might look very different in some ways. Harley admits in the season finale that becoming a supervillain was always just something that Joker wanted. And even the things she’s done since, like trying to get into the Legion of Doom, taking down the Injustice League, trying to takeover Gotham, weren’t even things that she wanted. She’s not even sure if she’s a villain at all. Hey, she even released the Justice League to take down the Parademons. Next season, Harley’s going to have to figure out what she actually wants to do, and it might not be villainy, although whatever it is, I’m sure she’ll do it in her signature Harley style.
