Icelandair has signed a Letter of Intent for four more Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Built in 2018, the ‘white tail’ aircraft are expected to be delivered to the airline in the fall of this year.

When complete, this latest order will bring the total number of 737 MAX aircraft in Icelandair’s fleet to 18. The airline currently has eight 737 MAX 8 aircraft and four 737 MAX 9 aircraft in its fleet, with a further two 737 MAX-8s on order. The airline has not stated which variants are included in the Letter of Intent.

Icelandair’s 737-8 MAX aircraft seat 160 passengers – 16 in business class (Saga Class) and 144 in economy class, while the larger -9 variant seats 178.

The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft brings with it both environmental and financial benefits to the airline. These modern aircraft use 37 % less fuel per trip than the Boeing 757-200, which for years was the backbone of Icelandair’s Transatlantic operation, and 14 % less than the Boeing 737 NG.

The airline’s recovery from the pandemic is well underway, despite now facing competition on many of its routes from low-cost-carrier PLAY. According to data from Cirium, Icelandair flew 316,000 passengers in May 2022 with an average load factor of 74.1 %. This represents 75 % of the number of passengers flown during the same period in 2019.
