Recently, amid soaring fuel costs and growing supply concerns triggered by the conflict in the Middle East, European airlines are preparing to challenge the EU mandate requiring the use of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) starting in 2030, and intend to push for its delay or even repeal.
According to people familiar with the matter, Airlines for Europe (A4E), composed of Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, Ryanair, easyJet, and IAG, the parent company of British Airways, intends to formally state that eSAF production is far from sufficient to meet market demand. It projects that only 0.7% of the targeted production volume will be achieved by 2030, compared with the mandatory requirement of 1.2% for the same year. A4E has warned that the supply shortfall could result in fines of €7 billion to €9 billion, which would ultimately be passed on from fuel suppliers to airlines and then to passengers.
